Anyone else would have sufficed. Pyp would have been happy with anyone else but the narcissistic bastard. The wall was awful enough without getting paired with Jon Snow. Pypar barely knew the man, but he was convinced that Snow had no idea what real work was. The only thing he had going for him was his swordsman skill, though Pyp distastefully ignored that fact. It was just aggravating to know that the guy could beat him with a hand tied behind his back. Anyway, Pypar sat along the wall, waiting for Jon to show up so that they could get the shift of hell over with. He scuffed his boot through the snow and pulled his coat on tighter, looking up suddenly when he saw the guy walking over him. He dragged himself up, gripped his sword, and began walking, not bothering to stop and greet the guy. ”Surprised you bothered to show up. Sure you’d like to continue? Might get your boots dirty.”

He couldn’t win. It didn’t matter where he went or what he did, apparently Jon was never going to fit in. He thought the Wall would be a place where he could abandon his surname (or lack thereof) and meet people who were like him. Never had he been more wrong. Instead of being surrounded by men of honor he was surrounded by bullies and criminals and the only person who didn’t seem to hate him was the Lannister… which was a confusing enough circumstance in its own regard. Jon was starting to wish he’d stayed in Winterfell.. though Winterfell without Ned and Arya wouldn’t be much better than where he was now. Pushing his hair back and beckoning Ghost to follow him he trudged up the side of the wall where he knew one of the other boys would be waiting for him. He didn’t know which one it was… It didn’t matter. He disliked them all equally. ”Surprised you bothered to show up. Sure you’d like to continue? Might get you’re your boots dirty.” ”Hilarious,” Jon remarked dryly, looking at the ground in frustration. He’d been getting shit like this since his got there. It hadn’t been funny the first time and it wasn’t funny now. ”I chose to come here,” he reminded, in a tone that was very much accusing. Jon knew what he was getting into (well.. sort of). The work wasn’t the problem. It was the fact that he had to interact with other people while doing it.

Hilarious. ”I thought so,” he responded very dryly as he kept walking. God, he hated this place. I chose to come here, Pyp still didn’t believe that. He couldn’t imagine how anyone would have horrible life that the wall was preferable. ”S’just a testament to your sanity, I suppose.” Or lack thereof. He had to be insane. There were people who’d been sent there who didn’t deserve it and here someone was, having wanted to be there. Needless to say Pypar was a little bitter. ”Why here? Why not run off into battle? It’d certainly be more honorable.” He had the skill. They’d all seen it first hand. Had Pyp been good with a sword he wouldn’t have been sent to the wall in the first place. He glanced at the wolf, immediately curious. He’d seen it before, but not so closely. ”It follow you everywhere?” he asked, trying to sound less interested than he actually was.

”S’just a testament to your sanity, I suppose.” He ignored the remark, Tyrion’s words echoing in his head. Jon didn’t know how the guy did it. It didn’t matter if he was proud of who he was… it was still going to be used against him. ”Why not run off into battle? It’d certainly be more honorable.” Jon almost laughed. ”It’s an honor to defend the Wall,” he quoted. That was what everyone had told him. And he'd really truely believed it. Now he didn't know any more. ”You don’t think I would have if I could?” Jon was the same age as Robb. As good as him with a sword. Maybe even better. But his brother would command an army one day (before becoming Lord of Winterfell) and Jon would be lucky to be among the lowest of the soldiers in it. And maybe they were right— maybe he was arrogant, but he thought he deserved the opportunity to do better than that. ”It follow you everywhere?” He glanced at the other boy and then the direwolf, as it trying to decipher the motive behind the question. ”Unless I tell it otherwise.” He’d been forced by the Lord Commander to leave Ghost in his room during training, but whenever it was allowed the wolf was at his side. He enjoyed its company (more than he enjoyed anyone else’s) and more than that, he didn’t trust what any of the other boys would do if they got their hands on the direwolf when Jon wasn’t around.

It’s an honor to defend the Wall, Pypar stopped dead in his tracks, furrowing an eyebrow and turning to face Jon. ”Who told you that rubbish?” Had Jon been tricked into going? That was really messed up. Like, Pyp would have almost been angry for him. ”We’re criminals,” he explained with disgust. ”We don’t get a chance at honor.” It wasn’t just. Unfair was such an understatement. You don’t think I would have if I could? Pyp scoffed. ”You’re a Stark, are you not?” He was pretty sure Starks could do anything they wanted. Needless to say he was slightly misinformed. He watched the wolf with interest, never having gotten so close to one. Unless I tell it otherwise. He glanced at Jon before kneeling into the snow, placing his sword on the ground. ”It’s beautiful.” He put a hand out though he kept it low, not wanting to startle the animal… or Jon. He wanted to show that he had no ill intent. ”Can I touch it?”

”Who told you that rubbish?” Jon immediately realized he should have never opened his mouth. ”It doesn’t matter.” he answered quickly, not wanting any of the others to have the impression that he’d been lied to. He was angry with his father, but he wouldn’t taint the man’s name. ”We’re criminals. We don’t get a chance at honor.” ”If we become rangers..” They had a chance to move up in the ranks. That was what had appealed to Jon in the first place. ”You’re a Stark, are you not?” ”I’m a Snow,” He might have looked like his father and been raised among his trueborn sons but he had never had the man’s name. The idea that other people didn't know how it worked wasn't one that had even occurred to him. There was certainly no one back home who didn't know it. ”It’s beautiful.” The remark had him taken slightly aback but he nodded, smiling slightly. ”They’re usually darker.. and bigger.” He figured if the guy wasn’t from the North he’d probably never seen one before. Jon had seen many, but never one like Ghost because the runts rarely survived. And the blood red eyes tended to unnerve people. ”Can I touch it?” He knelt in the snow as well. ”Ghost, down.” Jon instructed quietly, the direwolf sitting and lowering its head. It could be as volatile as Jon when provoked but it showed him extreme obedience. He nodded at Pyp that it was alright to touch him.

It doesn’t matter. Pyp raised an eyebrow, quickly picking up on the guy’s tone. ”It’s alright. I wouldn’t—“ He stopped himself short, not knowing what was going on. He was supposed to hate the guy. For some reason, he didn’t. If we become rangers… ”Don’t hold your breath.” Pypar didn’t think it was likely. Especially for him. ”Maybe you could. I won’t be so lucky.” Jon was trained. He was skilled. Pyp had a long way to go to get anywhere close to his talent. I’m a Snow. Pyp was actually surprised by that. He’d kind of assumed that they were the same thing. ”My mistake,” was all he could say on that matter. He now realized that he didn’t know as much about the guy as he’d thought. He actually didn’t know anything at all, really. They’re usually darker…and bigger. Pypar looked over the wolf, shaking his head. ”I like it better white.” It blended in with the snow. ”Smaller isn’t so bad either. Faster… agile.” He pulled a glove off and placed it on the ground, not wanting Ghost to feel threatened. Ghost, down. He was fascinated by the obedience. He reached forward slowly, gently placing his hand on the wolf’s head when Jon nodded. ”Train him yourself?” It was very impressive. He grinned slightly at the feel of the fur. It was amazing.

”It’s alright. I wouldn’t—“ Jon glanced at him briefly. The guy’s tone was a stark contrast to what it had been when they first started talking and from the looks of it, he was as confused as Jon. ”Maybe you could. I won’t be as lucky.” ”I could help you, if you wanted.” he offered, thinking about it. It didn’t seem fair the others weren’t properly trained. They should all have been on even ground. He couldn’t help looking slightly surprised when Pyp admitted to making a mistake. Apparently at some point in the last few minutes, the two of them had stopped hating one another. ”I like it better white. Smaller isn’t so bad either. Faster.. agile.” ”Quiet, too.” Granted Jon had trained it to be sneaky but it’s size put it at an advantage. He watched Pyp reach out his hand, the direwolf moving closer to him, enjoying the attention. ”Train him yourself?” He nodded. ”My brothers and I found them in the woods. It was the only way we were allowed to keep them.”

I could help you, if you wanted. Just when Pyp figured the guy couldn’t surprise him further—”You would?” he asked, raising an eyebrow skeptically. ”I’ve got a ways to go,” he warned. If Jon expected someone to come to him with a good amount of foundational skill, he was going to be disappointed. Quiet, too. Pypar cracked a grin. ”You speak from experience?” It sounded like the guy had used the wolf for getting into trouble in the past. As he explained, it seemed as if Ghost could certainly be helpful with that. My brothers and I found them in the woods. It was the only way we were allowed to keep them. ”He’s very good to you. You must be a patient trainer.” He could tell by the way the wolf respected Jon’s orders. He gently brushed through the white fur once more before putting his glove back on and getting to his feet, nodding a thanks as he lifted his sword and continued to walk again. ”Leave anyone behind to come here?”

”You would?” Jon supposed it was a bit of a surprising offer. He nodded. ”I’ve got a ways to go.” ”I’ll help you.” He promised. He’d taught Bran and Arya a lot of what they knew. He had faith that Pyp would catch on. ”You speak from experience?” He smiled a little, ”Maybe.” He and Arya had gotten into a lot of trouble growing up. It was only natural that the wolves were accustomed. ”He’s very good to you. You much be a patient trainer.” ”I’m not sure why he’s so obedient.. We’ve spent a lot of time together.” At home he’d had the least responsibilities of his siblings so in turn he’d spent the most time working with Ghost. Still, the wolf had always shown him a natural loyalty Jon didn’t understand. He got to his feet when Pyp did, walking again with Ghost at his side. ”Leave anyone behind to come here?” ”My brothers,” he answered, ”And my sister Arya. But I couldn’t go where she were going.” If he could have stayed with her and Ned you could bet he wouldn’t be at the wall right now. ”What about you?”

I’ll help you. Pyp grinned—it sounded great. He wasn’t sure if he believed Jon could do much, but if the guy was willing to try than so was he. ”Thank you.” He was so surprised it was impossible to hide it in his tone. Now if they could just get through some practicing without Jon stabbing Pyp then maybe he could trust him. Maybe. He smirked slightly, understanding completely. ”I’ve done my share. Would’ve been easier with one of those beauties beside me.” He’d have loved someone like Ghost. I’m not sure why he’s so obedient… We’ve spent a lot of time together. ”Food goes a long way,” he suggested. It did, when it came to animals and people. My brothers, and my sister Arya. But I couldn’t go where she was going. Pypar nodded. ”That’s a shame.” It was pretty clear to him that Jon wasn’t so happy about that. ”Better than them being stuck here, I suppose.” At least they were off, able to do things with their lives and not stuck in this shithole. What about you? He shook his head. ”No one important.”

”Thank you.” Jon nodded. Again, he was willing to work with the guy. Pyp seemed alright… Jon would admit that he was less of a little shit than he’d initially assumed. And truth be told he was going kind of crazy hanging out by himself all the time anyway. Just because he was used to it didn't mean it was something he enjoyed. ”I’ve done my share. Would’ve been easier with one of those beauties beside me.” ”Shame we can’t do much around here.” Jon commented. It didn’t seem like there was a single person who was even mildly capable of taking a joke. He’d have risked it, but he figured people already had enough reasons not to like him. ”That’s a shame. Better than them being stuck here, I suppose.” Jon chuckled slightly, ”Arya probably would like it.” She was crazy… But she’d have gotten along with the others better than Jon did and the ones who she didn’t get along with, they’d be pretty lucky if all they had to complain about was a broken nose. ”No one important.” ”Suppose that’s a good thing.” It was kind of awkward to comment on. It sucked that he didn’t have anybody but it would have sucked just as much if he did. Pretty much, everything sucked. Yeah, he was starting to figure that out.

Shame we can’t do much around here. Pyp chuckled lightly. ”I’m certain I could find trouble if I tried.” There wasn’t a lot to do around there, but there was always something. Pyp had been pretty good with staying out of trouble when it mattered in the past but at this point, if he was being punished for causing trouble, he had no issue looking for it. Arya probably would like it. ”Here?” he asked, kind of expecting that he misunderstood. ”Really?” He couldn’t imagine anyone liking it there, actually. It would be so bad if you could leave. Then again, most of the people there were unable to do so. Suppose that’s a good thing. He smirked, catching the tone in the guy’s voice. ”It is,” he confirmed. ”In the least, it’s preferable to your situation.” He was starting to realize that maybe it did suck to be Jon Snow. Maybe he wasn’t so bad.
